Laser hair reduction

What is Laser Hair Reduction?

Laser hair reduction is a medical procedure that uses concentrated beams of light to target and destroy hair follicles. The laser’s light is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) in the hair, which converts the energy into heat. This heat damages the hair follicle, slowing down or completely stopping future hair growth. The laser beam targets hair in the anagen/ growing phase only and subsequent sessions are planned in accordance with the same.

How Does Laser Hair Reduction Work?

Laser hair reduction works by using light energy that penetrates the skin and is absorbed by the pigment in the hair follicles. The light energy is then converted into heat, which effectively destroys the hair follicles responsible for producing hair.

The laser beam only targets hair follicles in the growing or Anagen phase of hair cycle.

Because hair grows in cycles and only growing phase follicles are targetted, multiple treatments are required to target all hair follicles during their active growth phase. Most patients see significant hair reduction after 6-8 treatments, spaced a few weeks/ month apart, depending on the area being treated and individual hair growth patterns.

What to Expect During Treatment:

  • Pre-Treatment: Your doctor may advise you to avoid sun exposure, waxing, or plucking before treatment. Shaving the treatment area a day before the procedure is usually recommended (after the treating doctor has evaluated hair growth patterns).

  • (*in cases of hormonal disturbances endocrine reference and hormonal assays are advisable to understand the nature and cause of hirsutism and may need to be treated before undergoing treatment, to avoid recurrence).

  • During Treatment: You may feel a mild sensation similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. Most people find the procedure to be relatively comfortable, though some areas may be more sensitive. A patch test is recommended especially for patients with more sensitive skin.

  • Post-Treatment: Some redness or slight swelling may occur, but these effects typically subside within a few hours. There is minimal downtime, so you can return to your normal activities right away.

Results from laser hair reduction are gradual, with hair becoming finer and less        noticeable after each session. Once the hair follicles are damaged, they can no longer produce hair, resulting in long-lasting smooth skin
